S-89 is one of 2 mirrored bills for the Universal National Service Act of 2003. It is the proposed DRAFT for ALL young men AND women ages 18-26 in the USA. If this comes into power (which it is roumored to as early as spring of 2005) you WILL be affected by it.

This forum will not let me post the bill because it takes up to much space, so PLEASE go to that link and check it out.
p.p.s Let me add that those of you that are saying "oh this will never happen, there would be massive protests and bla bla bla...", I have 3 words for you: The Patriot Act.

hollings and rangel did this to protest the war and not to reinstate the draft. basically to say "if this war is so necessary we need to reinstate the draft". it won't pass and was never intended to pass.

well instead of down playing it as you are, which will give it a greater chance of passing; why don't you help people learn about it so they are aware of it and can contact there elected representatives and express there grievances with it? So that way it will infact not pass.

dude. why do you think it hasn't been called before congress for a vote? Do you think ANY politician would vote for a bill like this? even the people that created it did it to prove a point against bush, not because they had any intention of it ever making it to the floor.

Well let's see... all but about 3 voted for the patriot act. We all have a good idea of how much shit that put us in. And are you going to tell me they did it again when the passed the patriot act 2 (secretly too I might add) to prove a point? What point is that? To show us how much they fear democracy (because democracy threatens privilege)? To show us that they can take our lives and freedoms away any time they want by telling us "oh, yea, there’s another one of those 'terrorist attack thingys’ coming so were going to declare marshal law and go to terrorist level red and keep you in your homes, and arrest you if you come out before we think this 'terrorist' thing is over"?
The fact of the mater is that the government was not ever intended to have this much power over it self, and the people.
I mean come on, for fucks sake they can now take your citizenship away if you commit a terrorist act, and a terrorist act is now declared as: any action that threatens life, or violates any federal or state law.

the fact that you're trying to compare this a bill created by democrats, a bill with NO republican backing in a republican senate and house to the patriot act is completely insane. If your issue is with the patriot act, then take it up with your congressmen and vote bush out of office and it will be going away. It's not like there aren't cases making their way up to the supreme court challenging it. But call a spade a spade. This isn't the patriot act. The patriot act was created and voted on in no time, while this has been around for a year plus? Doesn't that tell you something?

oh yeah. it was created on January 7, 2003. and amazingly enough the last time something happened with it was on january 7,2003
http://www.congress.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d108:S.89:
to put it in perspective s 6 was introduced on the same day and passed on january 9, 2003.

You know just as well as I do that bush is not going to get voted out of office.
Could you perhaps shed some light on why the Pentagon is discreetly recruiting 10,350 draft board officers and 11,070 appeals board members, as well? News papers like the Guardian, American free press, indymedia.org (granted AFP and indymedia are not exactly mainstream) and ofcource the associated press are screaming that there is a plan to instate a draft by june 15th 2005.
your S-6 link is broken
p.s. Exactly where did I make a comparason between the 2 bills? I may have used the passing of the USAPA as an example, but I don't see any where in my statement where I make a compareson between them.

bush has nothing to do with this bill. it's all democrats. have you spoken to your congress people about this bill? what makes you so convinced that it's an imminent threat when NOTHING has happened to it since january of 2003?
Where is the AP stating that there is a plan to instate a draft by 2005? Do you know how slow the government is? The fact that it would have to be included in the budget for 2004 to begin work for that? The fact that there is no popular support for a draft? What are you basing any of this fear on?
you're trying to act like because the patriot act was passed that anything can be passed. of course the patriot act
had popular support because people wanted to stop terrorist. At some point you have to think about what's worth spending time and energy on and what's just politics.
do a search on s-6 it'll come up. the bill was introduced 2 days before it was passed. If people were serious about this bill being anything something would have happened to it by now. It's certainly not going to go up for vote in an election year.

Where did I say bush had anything to do with the bill?
They gave an extra $28 million in funds to the SSS.

"you're trying to act like because the patriot act was passed that anything can be passed."
Wouldent you say so? And it's not just one case that we see here: http://www.sacurrent.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=10705756&BRD=2318&PAG=461&dept_id=482778&rfi=6
After they passed the USAPA the went and did it again with the USAPA-2, which Ashcroft stated on national telivision (which I saw with my own 2 eyes) never existed!!
Heres a few interesting stories that I tryed to keep in a dated order. If you want more I'll keep digging.

for this bill to succeed, it'd have to have the backing of the president. especilaly given the dynamics of congress. of course if you don't think bush would be for this, then it negates your concern.
the sources you read are streching as much as you are. $28 million in terms of increased funding is probably nothing more than new computer equipment. It's a drop in the bucket in terms of federal funding. The Guardian talks about the bills like they just happened. They left out the fact that it was over a year old and nothing has happened with it. The rest of them just say there is a need for new troops to replace what's already there. The one doesn't equate to an automatic draft. All of the reports are trying to imply that it's the Bush administration that wants this, and that's just simply not the truth.

Well I guess were going to have to wait and see reguardless.
I however, still don't intend to sit and wait quietly. I still think that the more people know about these bills the more it will ensure that these bills never see the light of day, wouldent you agree?

I'd say that people only have a finite amount of time and energy to spend on things, and should pick and chose what they're going to get upset about. If you're worried about the patriot acts, your time and energy would be better spent on getting them repealed than spending it on something that honest most likely won't happen. The country doesn't want or need a draft. If by some freak of nature this did happen no politician connected with it would survive and public outcry would get it stopped before it started.
