No, they are models in the canon eos range of D-SLR's. Its basically the same model but they keep improving it, the 50d is the latest model in that line. The high end is the 1d which they also improve on i think its 1d mk 3 at the moment beneath that is the 5d. At the lower end you have the 1000d, 450d, 300d, the XTI models and a bunch of other numbers with a d at the end which have no real bearing on what the camera is. I mean it starts off looking like the lower the number the better the camera but then you end up with a 300d not being up on a 400d, i'm sure it all makes sense to someone at canon but not to me. I just follow whats going on in the 50d line of things and then look at the 1d's and would love one but think around £3000 for just the body, no lens, is a bit steep for me. Like you say if i was earning money from photography i would own it then but hard to justify otherwise.
