abstinent-ness (?) is always a controversy when it comes to straightedge.

I've never considered myself abstinent, nor am i a virgin.
I've always had the outlook that if you are ready for a commitment and if you feel things are right and that your mature enough to handle a pre-martial sex life, then there's nothing wrong with it.

What im getting at is, recently my friend told me that him and one of his friends got into an argument as to whether you should claim abstinent as long as your straight edge.

on a serious note: straight edge and sex are two separate things. I don't engage in promiscous sex, but not because i'm sxe.

If it had anything to do with how straight edge is today, the vast majority of people who claim to be straight edge, couldn't. Sex is just too weird of an issue and isn't clear cut like drugs and alcohol.

i dont think it should be like a mandetory thing for the straight edge, personaly im waiting not neceasarly for marriage.. but i am atheist, but i still beilive in love (for the moment) so i think its more or less u should do with someone u truly love

I don't want to be an asshole, but I'm sick of fucking posers saying that sXe is only abstaining from alcohol and drugs. Edge is about living clean, and doing what the majority are not doing. True edge is like a religion: No drinking, smoking, drugging, or fucking. If your having sex, then you're not edge. It is clear cut like all the others. If your gonna do it, you better damn make sure it's the right person. I'm atheist too, and believe that abstaining from sex not only prevents pandemics/std's, but keeps population control in order. Not to mention the heartache and other bullshit that comes from thinking with ur dick. Sorry I'm coming off as a douche, but it's a hot topic around my scene.

Straight edge is only abstaining from alcohol and drugs. It's not clear cut at all. What can you do sex wise and not break edge? Is kissing someone breaking edge if you're not commited to them?

When I was younger and first getting into the hardcore scene, I heard that straightedge included no drink, no smoke, no drugs, no fuck. However, I never understood where the latter half of that statement originated. On the other hand, without the aid of inhibitors such as drugs and alcohol, the poor decision-making that comes with one-night stands and promiscuous sex dwindles. I find that many sxe individuals are looking for some sort of committment before having sex, which I think prevents all of the things that you've mentioned-STDs, heartache, unwanted pregnancy, and drama. It's just a wise decision to avoid fucking around. I'm not sure what you mean about straightedge being equivalent to a religion-I suppose you think that religion is just a list of rules to follow, as is straightedge. Both I believe are a lifestyle choice and more than that.
