it comes from a way of drumming which is called grinding. lot's of blast beats, kickdrums, and snare. short songs, undertuned guitars, sometimes growling. songs mostly speak about social and political issues, it's a punk genre basically.

napalm death where the first band to be labled grindcore but if u listen to them now they sound more thrash/death metal
