from what I've read/heard this is interesting if you like sociology and want to read an academic treatement of straight edge. otherwise, don't bother.

but they bring in that sexual responsibility aspect tied in with sxe

though they make a correction further:


For many straight-edge kids, however, being clean and sober was (and still is) the ultimate expression of resistance - resistance to the consumerist and self-indulgent ethos that defines mainstream U.S. culture.

Hopefully the author makes it clear that "sexually responsible lifestyle tenet" is quite optional.
